This is a project I did
with my fifth and sixth grade students when I was student teaching.
For American Education Week, I taught a brief lesson on the history of the
United States flag. The theme for American Education Week was
Building A Stronger America Through Education. As a class,
we discussed symbolic parts such of the flag, such as the colors, stripes,
and stars, and how this relates to the unity of America (hence the United
States). Then we discussed how American Education is strong and who
unifies it. Focusing on four major contributors to education: parents,
students, teachers/faculty/staff/administrators, and community, the students
designed Unity Flags with symbolic colors and symbols. Below is
a picture of the class in front of their flags, each individual flag, the grading guidelines, and
the flag design sheet. |
