Author Wendy Ratkovec

Introduction: Students research a site on the internet to answer questions relating to the circulatory system

Content Area(s) and Grade Level  5+

Integrated disciplines  Science, Technology

Objectives

Science Standards: (From NE State Standards; available at: http://www.nde.state.ne.us/Issu/SS/SocSStnd.html)

v    4.5.3 Students will develop an understanding of the structure and function in living systems.

Technology Standards: (From ISTE: available at: http://cnets.iste.org/index3.html)

vSelect and use appropriate tools and technology resources to accomplish a variety of tasks and solve problems.

     Materials/Technologies

v    Teacher prepared worksheet of the following questions:

1.     About how large is your heart?

2.     What 3 things can you do to have a healthy heart?

3.     Name the 4 chambers in a heart.

4.     What is the pulmonary circulation system?

5.     If you took all of an average child's blood vessels and laid them end to end the line would be over ___________ miles long.

6.     An adult's would be __________ long.

7.     (Bonus) What percentage of the population shares type A positive blood?

v    Computer with internet capabilities

v    Internet Resource/Tools: http://sln.fi.edu/biosci/biosci.html

v    Advance Preparation:

·        The teacher must prepare the worksheet of questions after previewing the web site.

v    Skills Needed: The children must be familiar with the use of the internet and the use of hyperlinks.

Procedures

Springboard This activity may be part of a study on the circulatory system or the heart, etc…  Students should have been introduced to, and should be familiar with this information.

What teacher is to do

v    Introduce the activity.  Group students in 2s, or allow them to work alone.

v    Explain the worksheet, if any questions.

v    Guide the students to the website.

v    Guide them in searching and answering the questions.

What students are to do

v    Complete the worksheet on the heart by researching the available website.

     Closure

Discuss any difficulties in using the website.  Did students find it easy?  Difficult?

     Assessment

Each student will be evaluated during the entire process as s/he gathers and records information on the worksheet.  Students will also be evaluated on the quality of their group or individual work.  The rubric shows the requirements that will be used to evaluate the student.  Encourage students to refer to the rubric throughout the activity to make sure that each student remains on task.

RUBRIC

         Beginning/ Developing/ Proficient/ Exemplary

Student participated positively
 in project independently or in

a group.

Student used online
resources to complete worksheet.

Student put forth quality time
towards the research.

Student analyzed information by:
1. Examining cause & effect relationships
2. Making inferences
3. Drawing conclusions
4. Summarizing

Information was well researched.

* Place a check for each outcome in the appropriate column.
* Student Outcomes for:

60-69%(beginning) 70-79%(developing) 80-89%(proficient) 90-100%(exemplary)

Explanation

I chose this activity because I liked the site that teaches about the heart.  It is very in-depth and has a lot of pictures to help the students learn about the circulatory system.  It is very easily navigable by the students.  The worksheet correlates with it very well.  The questions are not too difficult to answer.  This is an easy activity to work on simple research skills.
